VANS is a sneaker brand founded in 1966 by Paul Van Doren in partnership with Jim Van Doren, Gordon Lee, and Serge Delia. The brand name “Vans” means “Van and his friends”.

Vans is a brand that started with custom orders

In 1966, Van and friends opened a store on Broadway Avenue in Anaheim, California, and on the very first day they opened the store, the name “Vans” meant “Van and friends. On the first day they opened their store on Broadway Avenue in Anaheim, California, the storefront was lined with models that would later be named AUTHENTIC. Customers could choose the size and color they wanted, place their orders, and then have their pieces made to order. On the first day of the opening, 12 customers placed orders, and they were delivered in the evening. The “#44 AUTHENTIC,” which was the base model for custom orders at the time, is still loved today, with its design virtually unchanged.
